TCAPS board reviews security assessment report

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) — The Traverse City Area Public Schools Board of Education received a security assessment report at its Jan. 9 meeting from Secure Education Consultants (SEC).

SEC was hired as a third-party administrator to assess the school districts policies, procedures and operations.

“Contracting with security experts provides reassurance on current practices while highlighting recommendations for improvements. We must remain vigilant and flexible as best practices continue to evolve,” says Dr. John VanWagoner, II.

The review was presented by SEC founder and president Jason Russell.

“TCAPS is one of the best school districts we have surveyed,” Russell said.

SEC highlighted the strong relationships that TCAPS has in place with first responders, police and emergency management during its review.

A recent security upgrade for TCAPS includes the hiring of Patrick McManus as the safety and security coordinator.

After the presentation, community members were provided time for public comment.
