Site Assessments
A critical step to enhance an organization’s safety and security is conducting a comprehensive site assessment. This collaborative process identifies gaps and weaknesses in policy, procedure, and physical security and prescribes actionable recommendations aligned to the goals, culture, and budget of the organization.
What is a site assessment?
A site assessment is a comprehensive examination of all aspects of safety and security. This includes a detailed analysis of processes, procedures, training, equipment, technology, and physical security. An SEC consultant will visit the designated building sites and and work alongside the client to identify and evaluate vulnerabilities and risks.
Unlike an audit, a site assessment is a collaborative process. It is crucial during a site assessment that clients participate to ensure the organization’s goals are considered. Safety audits are often unilateral examinations and are intended to find fault. Our goal is to identify best practices currently in place and any opportunities for improvement related to safety and emergency preparedness.
How does the physical site assessment work?
SEC will thoroughly examine your facilities, including the following:
- The surrounding area for hazards
- Internal and external design features
- Existing technical and physical security measures and gaps in security infrastructure
- Review of your current emergency operations plan and safe trainings for staff members.
- Relevant safety and security policies, procedures, and processes
- Security features to include cameras, access control and other technology
- On-site interviews with key staff and leadership
Emergency Response Plan Evaluation
- Comprehensive review of existing Emergency Operations Plan
- Evaluation of communication and alert strategies, command and control, and emergency specific annexes
- Identification of potential vulnerabilities specific to emergency response
- Recommendations for improvements aligned with best practices
- Periodic re-evaluation to adapt to new and emerging threats and vulnerabilities
What is the time commitment?
Depending on the size of the facility, the site assessment takes approximately 3-4 hours per location. During one of those hours, we ask an individual with extensive knowledge of the facility be available to provide a tour and answer any policy and procedure questions.
How are findings reported?
Following the site assessment, SEC will provide the client with an initial findings report. SEC consultants meet with the client to discuss the report and findings to ensure the findings and recommendations are clear and actionable. SEC will prepare and deliver a final report and work with the client to develop priorities and strategies to address any gaps identified in the assessment.
What are the benefits of a site assessment?
A site assessment, when done properly, allows an organization to develop priorities to improve safety and security while being respectful of its needs.
- To reduce potential liability and risk

- To demonstrate an organization's commitment to creating a safer and more secure environment
