We’re All Spartans

It’s a difficult day in Michigan – and beyond – as we all try to make sense of what happened last night on Michigan State University’s campus. As a dad of an MSU student who was sheltering in place, I was watching the scene unfold with fear and anguish in my heart. I started Secure Education Consultants after seeing the horror that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School. I was in shock as I grappled with what would happen if my children were in a situation like this – just over 10 years later, one was.

While sifting through news updates and viewing the live footage, one value was reinforced for me: the importance of training. I watched as the MSU Police, Michigan State Police, FBI and surrounding local units responded swiftly and efficiently, working together to end the situation as quickly as possible. This was reinforced by MSU Police Chief Marlon Lynch and Interim Deputy Chief Chris Rozman in their press updates as they shared how critical the relationships between departments and cross training were in responding to this incident.

Having a security game plan for the inevitable isn’t a nice to – it’s a need to.

As we’ve all seen, it doesn’t matter the community – large or small, urban or rural, rich or poor – gun violence happens everywhere. We cannot sit back and think “this will never happen here.” As those entrusted with the safety of students, we have a responsibly to do everything in our power to prepare for the worst – while hoping for the best.

I commend Michigan State University as well as all law enforcement and first responders involved for their quick action to communicate with students and respond to this horrific incident. They acted with professionalism and followed their established and tested game plan. Their actions saved lives.

And yet, there are three human lives lost – and five more injured, all in critical condition. It’s difficult for most of us to understand why this happened in the first place.

There is a lot we don’t know at this point. There is a lot of anger, sadness and confusion. There is a lot of healing that must take place. However, in this moment, we’re all Spartans, mourning the loss of life and standing firm with the campus community.

Please know the SEC team and I are here to support you today and in the days to come.
