Preparing for the Unexpected: The Importance of Lockdown Drills in Childcare Facilities

Scenario: Your childcare center has received notification that there is ongoing law enforcement activity in your community related to an unresolved and potentially dangerous situation. Local authorities have issued a community-wide recommendation for businesses, residents, and schools to go into lockdown.

As childcare providers, you bear an incredible responsibility – not just the daily education, development, and care of young children but for their safety at all times and especially in an emergency.  Effective responses to emergencies like fires, natural disasters, or regional or local security threats require preparedness and poise.

Having partnered with hundreds of childcare providers throughout the country, we fully understand the unique challenges owners, administrators, and teachers face in responding to these situations.

Most lockdown protocols utilized by schools, for example,  incorporate the following elements:

  • Moving students inside classrooms and locking doors and windows
  • Moving students out of line of site
  • Having students remain quite

Childcare centers, though, have to account for the needs of very young children, including infants and toddlers and commonly have unique design features and requirements not often found in traditional K-12 environments which can make the execution of the recommended elements especially difficult.

Moving a group of children-many of whom may need to be carried – can be both time consuming and physically demanding, especially in high pressure situations.

During lockdowns, maintaining calm and quiet in an environment filled with young, scared, or confused children while managing your own stress can be extremely difficult and feel overwhelming.

Securing children and moving to areas that provide cover or concealment  inside classrooms that have doors that may not have locks, are connected to multiple other classrooms, are part of an open floor-plan design can, or have significant amounts of exposed glass can seem almost impossible.

These examples are just some of the unique challenges childcare centers face in efficiently and effectively responding not just to lockdown scenarios, but  also to the many other emergency situations, such as those related to medical situations or severe weather events, that may be more commonly experienced.

Although these challenges can feel daunting, we firmly believe that they are not impossible to overcome.  As childcare providers, your dedication to safety and well-being of children is inspiring. You do not have to navigate the complexities  of emergency preparedness alone.

At SEC, we’re here to support you with solutions that work in the real world and ease the burden on your team. Together, we can create an environment where children and staff can feel safe, empowered – even in the face of the unexpected.

Here are some of the ways we can help:

  • Comprehensive Site Assessments: We evaluate your facility’s layout, procedures, and daily operations to identify potential security gaps an to help create improved alignment between operating and emergency procedures with your center’s unique design features.
  • Staff Training for Emergencies: We provide on-site, virtual, and online expert-led training on emergency protocols, including  evacuation, lockdown and shelter-in-place procedures ensuring staff respond effectively under pressure.
  • Crisis Response Support: When emergencies arise, we offer immediate guidance and conduct post-incident reviews to strengthen future responses.
  • Policy Development: We help you create clear, actionable, and enforceable safety policies that meet regulations.
  • Solutions: We do our best to ensure every center can enhance its safety regardless of budget constraints, in many cases offering low-cost or no-cost solutions to help close security gaps.
