Targeted Social Media Research:  An Essential Tool for Comprehensive School Security Programs

In an increasingly interconnected world, social media platforms have become a significant aspect of students’ lives. According to a recent survey conducted by Gallup, teenagers spend an average of 4.8 hours on social media per day; this includes the top five most popular platforms:  YouTube, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok.

While these platforms can foster community and communication, they also pose challenges related to safety and security in schools. Targeted social media research has emerged as an effective tool within comprehensive school security programs, providing critical insights that can enhance overall safety and well-being in educational environments.

What is targeted social media research?

Targeted social media research is emerging as a powerful tool for enhancing school safety by allowing for the early detection of potential threats, supporting mental health interventions, and fostering a safer school environment. It is the deliberate and focused monitoring of an individual’s publicly available social media presence and content when a concern arises about their behavior, mental health, or potential involvement in harmful activities.

When we conduct this type of research, we are looking for evidence of any intentionally or unintentionally revealed feelings, thoughts, or hints of intent to commit harm. We are also looking for any evidence of risk factors that may contribute to the credibility of the threat (social stressors or victimization, for example).

One of the primary benefits of targeted social media research is its ability to detect potential threats. By analyzing posts and conversations, SEC can identify warning signs related to bullying, self-harm, or violence. For instance, students may express distress or intentions to harm themselves or others through social media. Early detection can allow school officials to intervene before situations escalate, potentially saving lives and maintaining a safe school environment.

Though many threats turn out to be non-serious, they all need to be investigated thoroughly and promptly.  If the threat is real and credible, be sure to contact law enforcement immediately as they can subpoena the information for the direct web or AP address.  In situations where a concerning behavior arises, SEC can partner with your school to provide targeted social media research.  Our team will research publicly available information associated with the individual’s online activity and provide your organization with a comprehensive report that allows you to determine the appropriate course of action.   This tool allows your threat assessment team to operate with a high level of confidence, knowing you have as much information as possible.

Why is it so important?

Research indicates that a significant percentage of school shooters exhibited warning signs prior to their actions.  Studies show that over 75% of school shootings have displayed behaviors that raised red flags, such as threats, expressions of violence, or concerning social interactions.  More than 80% had talked about their plans or made threats to others before the violent act occurred.

Social media might be the only place an individual makes a threat.  By integrating targeted social media research into your school safety plan, you are enhancing your ability to detect, prevent, and respond to potential threats, ultimately creating a safer, more supportive environment for your students and staff.
